For seniors who are living at home, but need extra support during the day because of memory and cognitive issues, adult day care services can be a great option. “There are many reasons why family members may explore day services for their loved one,” explains Lana Pozdnyakov, MBA/HCA, program administrator. “A loved one with memory problems is an extremely common concern and is one of the reasons why our memory enhancement program is woven throughout all of the care that we provide.”
Even before a client begins adult day care services at Abramson Medical Adult Day, extensive assessments are given to evaluate the senior’s home environment, medical needs, ability to complete activities of everyday living, and memory and cognitive abilities. These early assessments ensure that a plan can be immediately developed that puts the correct supports in place. “One of our goals with these assessments is to help prevent further cognition and memory decline. We want to help clients sustain and retain functioning at the level they enter our program,” says Lana.
For many clients, the memory enhancement program takes the form of therapeutic recreation. Therapists can plan cognitive exercises like word and memory games. A current event discussion group can help maintain critical thinking skills. Art and music therapies keep clients invested in favorite hobbies which helps prevent withdrawal and boredom leading to further mental decline. If needed, program staff will work one-on-one with clients to provide extra support.
Additionally, attending an adult day care service offers a regular opportunity to socialize which can have a positive impact on senior memory care. “When seniors are isolated, they tend to cognitively decline quicker than those that stay connected with others,” says Lana. “Simply leaving the house and coming to a safe, healthy, stimulating environment can have a great effect on overall cognition.”
Senior memory care is truly an interdisciplinary team effort at Abramson Medical Adult Day Services. All staff members are invested in monitoring each client and initiating cognitive interventions as soon as a change occurs. “Every day, our mission at Abramson Medical Adult Day Services is to care for the whole person – emotionally, spiritually, physically – and we do that by making sure that we really know each of our clients,” says Lana. “When we notice a change in cognitive functioning, we are able to work together to mitigate any problems and make sure our clients continue to age as well as possible.”
