When to Call for Hospice Services

Tuesday June 27, 2017

Deciding to arrange hospice services for your loved one is a sensitive and difficult decision. But the benefits of receiving hospice are numerous and a well-qualified hospice staff can provide much comfort and relief to both the patient and their family members. However, many wait until too late to hire a hospice service, missing out on crucial care.  If you are considering hospice care for your loved one, here is when you should make the call.

When to call

Hospice services can be arranged when the patient is given a life expectancy of six months or less from a physician. This does not mean that hospice care ends if the patient lives beyond that time frame. As long as a doctor continues to certify eligibility, care can be continued.

Hiring a hospice service as soon as the prognosis is received is beneficial to both patient and their family members. A well-qualified hospice care staff can help ensure a greater quality of life and provide both physical and emotional comfort.

Hospice Criteria

The only criterion to receive hospice care is that the patient has a life-limiting illness.

Hospice can be paid for through private insurance or Medicare. Many non-profit hospices provide care for those who do not have the means to pay.
